Independent testing has found gaps, and Fortinet closed them quickly. SDxCentral reported that NSS Labs, testing for CyberRatings.org, bypassed FortiGate with TCP evasions in 2025. CyberRatings.org recommended FortiGate after NSS Labs retested Fortinet's updated signatures, which raised its security effectiveness from 79.24 to 99.24 percent.
Fortinet ties its products together in the Security Fabric, with FortiOS running the network products. Fortinet calls FortiOS the foundational engine of the fabric. Secure SD-WAN, SSE, zero trust, wireless control and FortiGuard services share its operating system, policy engine and management plane. Fortinet runs FortiSASE's access functions on one operating system with one agent and one console.
The fabric also connects to other vendors' products. Fortinet says the Security Fabric works with more than 500 third-party solutions. FortiSOC integrates bidirectionally with more than a thousand multivendor products as well as the Fortinet portfolio. FortiGuard Labs supplies the threat intelligence that continuously updates FortiGuard services across those products.
Fortinet's founder still runs the company and built an earlier firewall company before it. Ken Xie is Fortinet's Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, according to its SEC-filed results. Fortinet's leadership page says his second company, NetScreen, developed ASIC-based firewall hardware and was acquired by Juniper for $4 billion, and Wikipedia records the same acquisition.
Fortinet continues that hardware approach in its own processors. It designs the security processing units inside FortiGate firewalls, and SP5 is the fifth generation of its security processor. The leadership page credits NetScreen with the same kind of dedicated firewall hardware, so one engineering approach runs across both companies.
