## Executive Summary

Tailscale is durable on engineering and position, exposed on the assets a funded rival can accumulate. The mesh, built on WireGuard, is hard distributed-systems work and the connectivity layer that workloads depend on to reach resources, which is what makes the company hard to displace. The paid-client base that crossed 10,000 in early 2025 and a roughly $1.5 billion valuation are reach into buyers rather than a dataset a rival cannot rebuild, and the product sells software the customer runs rather than judgment. Aperture sharpens the tension. It is self-serve and can be bought separately from paid Tailscale plans, which loosens the embedding the core business relies on, and it competes in an AI gateway market a cloud platform could enter by adding the same routing as a feature.
