## Executive Summary

Cequence sells software that protects the websites, mobile apps and APIs of large financial services, retail and telecom companies from bots, fraud and business-logic abuse. Its AI Gateway authenticates each AI agent and limits it to the tools and permissions assigned to it. Founded in 2014, Cequence names Ulta Beauty, NTT DOCOMO, Garmin, Snap Finance, Saudi Aramco and JD Sports among its customers. Menlo Ventures led its $60 million Series C in 2021. Deloitte's 2025 Technology Fast 500 ranked Cequence 128th on 652% revenue growth from 2021 to 2024. Gartner Peer Insights rates the platform 4.7 across 44 ratings. Cequence's software blocks attacks in customers' live traffic, so a customer that leaves could have to recreate the blocking policies and agent permissions it configured.

## Market Readiness

How well the company can compete in its security market, scored across eight dimensions against public evidence.

**Established (26/40)**

Analyzed 2026-09-23. Scope: whole company.

| Dimension | Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Problem Clarity | 3/5 | Cequence names a clear buyer and problem. Security teams face bots, business-logic abuse and fraud against their applications and APIs. They now also face AI agents that inherit users' full permissions. The quantified pain comes from Cequence's own pages and case studies, such as 85.9 million blocked requests at Ulta Beauty. The Center for Internet Security's AI guides name agent risks such as credential misuse. Cequence co-wrote those guides, so they don't independently quantify the pain. \[[s1](#profile-analysis-sources), [s2](#profile-analysis-sources), [s28](#profile-analysis-sources), [s27](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| Capability Depth | 3/5 | Cequence's own pages give concrete capability detail. The AI Gateway page describes agent authentication, limits on each agent's tools and sensitive-data checks on responses from connected tools. It also details inline enforcement on every tool call. The outside points are anonymous Gartner Peer Insights reviews and an analyst quote that Cequence relays on its homepage. Neither is a third-party technical evaluation or code open to inspection. \[[s3](#profile-analysis-sources), [s1](#profile-analysis-sources), [s20](#profile-analysis-sources), [s12](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| Market Timing | 3/5 | Timing is plausible, and the enabler is enterprises connecting AI agents to applications, which Cequence's July 2025 AI Gateway targets. Only one recent, independent kind of buyer-side signal appears. Gartner Peer Insights carries validated user reviews in its API Protection market, including one dated February 2026. Deloitte's list measures growth from 2021 to 2024, and Cequence co-wrote the April 2026 CIS agent guides. \[[s10](#profile-analysis-sources), [s20](#profile-analysis-sources), [s26](#profile-analysis-sources), [s27](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| Team Credibility | 3/5 | Both co-founders held senior Symantec engineering roles before starting Cequence in 2014. Shreyans Mehta led development of a Symantec network security and intrusion prevention platform. Google Patents lists Mehta and Ameya Talwalkar as inventors on a patent granted to Cequence in 2018. Only Cequence's own about page states the Symantec builds. Neither founder shows a prior exit in the cited sources, so the independent evidence stops at the patent. \[[s4](#profile-analysis-sources), [s29](#profile-analysis-sources), [s27](#profile-analysis-sources), [s15](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| GTM Proof | 4/5 | Cequence names multiple reference customers. Its pages quote Ulta Beauty's VP of IT risk management and Snap Finance's CISO. It announced NTT DOCOMO's deployment in August 2026. Its homepage also names Poshmark and Garmin under a 'Trusted by Leading Enterprises' heading. Two non-vendor records bear on traction. Deloitte's 2025 list, built from company nominations, shows 652% revenue growth from 2021 to 2024. Gartner hosts 44 buyer ratings. \[[s28](#profile-analysis-sources), [s2](#profile-analysis-sources), [s7](#profile-analysis-sources), [s1](#profile-analysis-sources), [s26](#profile-analysis-sources), [s20](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| Funding Efficiency | 3/5 | A 2019 SEC Form D records a $17,000,082 equity offering, which TechCrunch reported as a $17 million Series B. Menlo Ventures led a $60 million Series C in December 2021. Deloitte's list shows 652% revenue growth from 2021 to 2024, which suggests output proportionate to capital. Revenue and margins stay private, so efficiency itself isn't confirmed. \[[s23](#profile-analysis-sources), [s15](#profile-analysis-sources), [s8](#profile-analysis-sources), [s26](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| Category Clarity | 4/5 | Buyers and outside writers place Cequence's core business without vendor coaching. Gartner Peer Insights lists the platform in its API Protection market and names Akamai API Security and Imperva API Security as alternatives. A telecommunications reviewer there calls it top-tier API protection and bot defense, and TechCrunch describes the company's shift to API security. The homepage now leads with governing AI agents, a category still forming, but that newer framing leaves the placement of the core business intact, which meets rung 4. \[[s20](#profile-analysis-sources), [s15](#profile-analysis-sources), [s1](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |
| Incumbent Defensibility | 3/5 | API security is consolidating into larger platforms. In February 2025, Harness and API security vendor Traceable announced they'd combine under the Harness name. Gartner lists Akamai API Security as the top alternative to Cequence. Cequence's friction against bundling is its inline enforcement, the blocking policies customers tune on it and a granted patent. The cited sources show no data network effect or multi-year lock-in that would stop a platform from bundling similar controls. \[[s19](#profile-analysis-sources), [s20](#profile-analysis-sources), [s3](#profile-analysis-sources), [s28](#profile-analysis-sources), [s29](#profile-analysis-sources)\] |

### Business Risks

- API security is consolidating into larger platforms, as the February 2025 Harness and Traceable merger announcement shows. A buyer that already gets API protection from a platform vendor could decline a separate purchase.
- Cequence's product page measures the AI Gateway against a standard AI gateway. Buyers who judge a standard gateway good enough may not fund the AI Gateway's extra controls as a separate purchase.
- The last disclosed priced round is the December 2021 Series C, and Cequence keeps revenue and margins private.
- Recent traction figures come mostly from Cequence's own releases, including its record fiscal fourth quarter of 2026. The cited sources give no deal values for those wins.

### Problem & Market

Cequence sells to enterprises whose web, mobile and API channels face automated attacks, business-logic abuse and fraud. Its platform page lists concrete cases, from credential stuffing to scalper bots that buy out high-demand inventory. The Ulta Beauty case study shows the scale, with an inventory-scraping attack that hit 700 times normal API volume.

Since 2025 Cequence has extended the problem to AI agents. Its homepage says employees give agents real work while the agents inherit their users' full permissions. Its July 2025 AI Gateway launch release argued that agentic AI adoption was outpacing guardrails like the EU AI Act.

Cequence's own figures put the scale in numbers. Its homepage reports 10 billion daily application interactions and 200 million daily agentic interactions. The CIS guides that Cequence co-wrote name agent risks such as data leakage, credential misuse and unsafe tool execution. \[[s2](#profile-analysis-sources), [s28](#profile-analysis-sources), [s1](#profile-analysis-sources), [s10](#profile-analysis-sources), [s27](#profile-analysis-sources)\]

### Product Capabilities

The Cequence Platform combines bot management, API security and web application and API protection (WAAP) on one behavioral engine. Cequence says it began with API bot management, then added API security, governance and WAAP against DDoS and common web application attacks. The platform page says it evaluates live traffic at runtime and separates humans, bots and legitimate automation without CAPTCHAs.

The Cequence AI Gateway applies that approach to AI agents. It sits between agents and the applications they call, authenticates each agent and enforces policy inline on every tool call. Agent Personas, generally available since April 2026, turn a plain-English job description into a scoped set of tools. The gateway also scans agent requests and responses from tools connected through Model Context Protocol (MCP) for sensitive data and screens prompts for injection.

Two outside voices describe the product. Cequence's homepage quotes Dr. Chase Cunningham describing the AI Gateway as a reference implementation of the agent gateway pattern. A Gartner Peer Insights reviewer praises the platform's API visibility and bot defense, and Gartner labels those reviews as users' opinions. \[[s2](#profile-analysis-sources), [s3](#profile-analysis-sources), [s12](#profile-analysis-sources), [s1](#profile-analysis-sources), [s20](#profile-analysis-sources)\]

### Competitive Positioning

Cequence competes in API protection against larger platforms. Gartner Peer Insights names Akamai API Security, Imperva API Security and Apigee as the top alternatives to its platform. Consolidation continues around it, as Harness and Traceable announced in February 2025 that they'd combine under the Harness name.

Cequence argues that standard gateways only authorize calls, while its AI Gateway also controls what each agent does. Its product page contrasts the two in a comparison table of its own.

Cequence reports competitive wins in its own releases. It says it beat incumbent vendors in two Middle East evaluations during its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026. \[[s20](#profile-analysis-sources), [s19](#profile-analysis-sources), [s3](#profile-analysis-sources), [s9](#profile-analysis-sources)\]

### Go-to-Market & Traction

Cequence names a broad set of enterprise customers. Its homepage names Poshmark, NTT DOCOMO, Ulta Beauty, Snap Finance and Garmin under a 'Trusted by Leading Enterprises' heading. Its pages quote Ulta Beauty's VP of IT risk management and Snap Finance's CISO by name. The CEO's bio cites flagship deals with Saudi Aramco and JD Sports.

Cequence reports expansion in 2026. In August it announced that NTT DOCOMO had deployed its platform. In June it said its largest deal came from a Japanese telecom provider. That June release also cites new customers in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, South Korea, Brazil and the United States.

Two records outside Cequence bear on traction. Deloitte's 2025 Technology Fast 500 list ranks Cequence 128th on 652% revenue growth from 2021 to 2024. Deloitte compiles the list from company nominations. Gartner Peer Insights shows 44 ratings averaging 4.7 in its API Protection market. \[[s1](#profile-analysis-sources), [s28](#profile-analysis-sources), [s2](#profile-analysis-sources), [s4](#profile-analysis-sources), [s7](#profile-analysis-sources), [s9](#profile-analysis-sources), [s26](#profile-analysis-sources), [s20](#profile-analysis-sources)\]

### Team & Credibility

Co-founders Ameya Talwalkar and Shreyans Mehta came from engineering leadership at Symantec. Talwalkar was Director of Engineering there, leading malware-prevention work, and Mehta led a network security and intrusion prevention platform. Talwalkar now serves as president and CEO, and Mehta as CTO.

Part of the founders' technical record is verifiable outside Cequence. Google Patents lists both as inventors on a mobile API attack-detection patent granted to Cequence in 2018. A Center for Internet Security release quotes Mehta as CTO on the AI companion guides that Cequence co-wrote.

The leadership bench has grown around the founders. In December 2021 TechCrunch quoted Larry Link as CEO, a veteran the founders had hired. The current about page lists Talwalkar as CEO. It also lists a CFO, a CISO and regional sales leaders for the Americas, Asia-Pacific and EMEA. \[[s4](#profile-analysis-sources), [s29](#profile-analysis-sources), [s27](#profile-analysis-sources), [s15](#profile-analysis-sources)\]

### Trust Readiness

Cequence's trust center lists current attestations. It shows PCI DSS v4.0.1 for 2025, and ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 for 2026. It also offers a penetration test executive report and a 2026 SOC 2 bridge letter.

The trust center names U.S. federal agencies and major financial institutions among the organizations Cequence protects. For the AI Gateway, Cequence says it holds EU AI Act provider obligations for its intelligence layer. It offers Annex IV documentation to customers under NDA. \[[s5](#profile-analysis-sources), [s3](#profile-analysis-sources)\]

### Competitors

## Strategy Deep Dive

A closer look at the company's product strategy, measuring how [defensible](https://zeltser.com/scoring-security-product-strategy) it is against market forces and examining the [eight areas](https://zeltser.com/security-product-creation-framework) behind it.

### Defensibility

**Defensible (15/21)**

Band guidance: press the advantage. Analyzed 2026-09-23. Scope: whole company.

Cequence's position depends on enforcement points it runs inside customers' live traffic. Snap Finance's CISO says Cequence intercepts threat traffic outside the company's perimeter. The AI Gateway enforces policy on every agent tool call routed through it. Customers tune blocking policies and configure each agent's permitted tools and actions on those components, so leaving could mean recreating that work. Cequence also holds a patent, granted in 2018 and invented by its two founders, on detecting attacks against mobile APIs. Other platforms compete for the same budget. Gartner lists Akamai API Security as the top alternative to the Cequence platform.

| Dimension | Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Value Delivery | 1/3 | Customers buy a software platform that their own teams run against API, bot and agent traffic. Cequence also sells managed services. The Ulta Beauty case shows its CQ Prime researchers writing blocking policies with the customer. Those services attach to the software, and the software is what customers buy. \[[s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s4](#deep-dive-sources), [s28](#deep-dive-sources)\] |
| Switching Cost | 2/3 | Leaving means replacing an enforcement point in live traffic and likely recreating the policies tuned on it. The Ulta Beauty case shows blocking policies built with Cequence's researchers. AI Gateway customers define agent personas for their tools. The cited record documents that tuned state. It doesn't size the migration or show that the state is locked in. \[[s28](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s2](#deep-dive-sources)\] |
| Compliance Moat | 1/3 | Cequence's SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS attestations are ones a funded rival can also earn. The cited record shows no authorization or mandate exclusive to Cequence that would block a replacement. \[[s5](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources)\] |
| Problem Complexity | 3/3 | Cequence detects and blocks automated attacks in live traffic across what it reports as 10 billion daily interactions. In 2021 TechCrunch quoted its then-CEO saying it weighs about 150 data points to judge each request. Doing that inline without blocking legitimate users takes real-time systems and years of specialized expertise. \[[s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s15](#deep-dive-sources), [s29](#deep-dive-sources)\] |
| Buyer Profile | 3/3 | Cequence sells to regulated enterprises and governments. Its trust center names U.S. federal agencies and major financial institutions among the organizations it protects. Its 2026 releases report wins in financial services, government and telecom, including NTT DOCOMO's deployment. \[[s5](#deep-dive-sources), [s9](#deep-dive-sources), [s7](#deep-dive-sources)\] |
| Layer | 3/3 | Cequence runs enforcement components inline in the traffic routed through them. The AI Gateway authenticates each agent and enforces policy inline on every tool call. Snap Finance's CISO says Cequence intercepts threat traffic outside the company's perimeter. Applications depend on those components only for the traffic routed through them. \[[s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s2](#deep-dive-sources)\] |
| Proprietary Data, Content, or IP | 2/3 | Cequence holds granted IP. Google Patents lists Cequence Security as assignee of US10135904B2, a 2018 patent on validating requests from mobile applications. Its two founders are the inventors. A rival can design around one patent with time and effort. No retained cross-customer dataset appears in the cited record, so its traffic volume counts as operating scale. \[[s29](#deep-dive-sources), [s4](#deep-dive-sources), [s2](#deep-dive-sources)\] |

### Strategic Market Segmentation

Cequence sells to large enterprises across financial services, retail, telecom, healthcare and the public sector. Its homepage navigation lists those industries, and its platform page cites large financial services, retail and telecom organizations. The trust center adds U.S. federal agencies to the buyers it names.

Cequence is widening its geography. Its June 2026 release reports new customers in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, South Korea, Brazil and the United States. In August 2026 it announced NTT DOCOMO's deployment and more investment in Japan. It works there with ITOCHU Techno-Solutions as its local sales partner.

The newest segment is enterprises putting AI agents to work on internal applications. Cequence built the AI Gateway for that buyer and launched it in Japan alongside the DOCOMO announcement. A Fortune 50 telecom CISO quoted on the product page called it a major unlock for that work. \[[s1](#deep-dive-sources), [s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s5](#deep-dive-sources), [s9](#deep-dive-sources), [s7](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Product Capabilities & AI Advantages

Cequence's core capability is judging traffic by behavior at runtime. The platform page says it separates humans, bots and legitimate automation without interrupting users with CAPTCHAs. In 2021 TechCrunch quoted then-CEO Larry Link saying Cequence weighs about 150 data points per judgment.

The Cequence AI Gateway turns that engine toward AI agents. It authenticates each agent and then enforces policy inline on every tool call. Agent Personas limit each agent to the tools its job needs. Agent Access Keys, released in April 2026, bind agent identity, user identity and persona privileges into one credential.

Cequence holds granted IP. Google Patents lists Cequence Security as assignee of a 2018 patent on validating requests from mobile applications. Its two founders are the inventors, and Google shows the patent as active. \[[s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s15](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s12](#deep-dive-sources), [s29](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Sales Engagement & Go-to-Market

Cequence sells through channel partners. Its November 2025 release says it's fully committed to a channel-only model, with partners driving 74% of net-new revenue. It works with ITOCHU Techno-Solutions in Japan, and its June 2026 release names new partners GuidePoint, Aplidigital and IT-Harmony.

A hired sales organization runs the regions. The about page lists one sales vice president for the Americas and Asia-Pacific. Another, based in Dubai, runs EMEA. The CEO's bio still credits him with personally securing flagship deals with Saudi Aramco and JD Sports.

Buyers start with a personalized demo. Both the platform page and the AI Gateway page invite prospects to one. The Ulta Beauty case describes a deployment that combined the Cequence software with its managed services. \[[s11](#deep-dive-sources), [s7](#deep-dive-sources), [s9](#deep-dive-sources), [s4](#deep-dive-sources), [s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s28](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Pricing Model

The captured Cequence pages carry no price list and route buyers to personalized demos. Gartner's product listing says pricing typically depends on the number of APIs protected, deployment scale and features. It adds that contracts often take the form of annual subscriptions or enterprise licenses.

The AI Gateway gives customers controls over their own AI spend. Admins can cap token use and spending per day and month. \[[s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s20](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Product Delivery & Operations

Cequence deploys where the customer's traffic runs. The platform page lists SaaS, on-premises and hybrid deployment. The Ulta Beauty case describes a deployment on AWS across multiple availability zones. The company description on Cequence's Gartner Peer Insights listing says onboarding an API takes under 15 minutes without instrumentation.

Cequence's own pages disagree on how the AI Gateway deploys. The product page says it supports SaaS and on-premises deployment. The 2025 launch release listed SaaS and a Helm chart. The trust center describes the gateway as available only as SaaS.

The AI Gateway runs inline between agents and the applications they call. Its availability matters to every agent that uses it. The product page states that this inline enforcement must not be a single point of failure. \[[s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s28](#deep-dive-sources), [s20](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s10](#deep-dive-sources), [s5](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Earning Customers' Trust

Cequence's trust center lists PCI DSS v4.0.1 for 2025, and ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 for 2026. It also offers a penetration test executive report, a 2026 SOC 2 bridge letter and a certificate of insurance.

The trust center names U.S. federal agencies and major financial institutions among the organizations Cequence protects. For EU AI Act deployers, Cequence says it holds provider obligations for the AI Gateway's intelligence layer. It offers Annex IV documentation under NDA. \[[s5](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Platform Strategy & Ecosystem Positioning

Cequence sells one platform made of modular products. The platform page describes bot management, API security, web application and API protection and the AI Gateway on one behavioral foundation. It invites customers to start with one product and add others.

The AI Gateway connects agents to a large catalog of applications. Its product page cites more than 140 enterprise applications such as Salesforce, Jira, Slack and Confluence. Cequence's June 2026 release put the count above 190 verified integrations.

Cequence also helps shape outside guidance for agent security. It co-wrote AI security guides with the Center for Internet Security and Astrix Security. The guides cover large language models, agents and their connections to tools. \[[s2](#deep-dive-sources), [s3](#deep-dive-sources), [s9](#deep-dive-sources), [s27](#deep-dive-sources)\]

### Team & Execution Capability

Co-founders Ameya Talwalkar and Shreyans Mehta built security products at Symantec before starting Cequence in 2014. Talwalkar led malware-prevention engineering there, and Mehta led a network security and intrusion prevention platform. Talwalkar is now president and CEO, and Mehta is CTO.

The founders' inventions are on public record. Google Patents lists both as inventors on a mobile API attack-detection patent that Cequence was granted in 2018. The CIS release on the AI companion guides quotes Mehta as CTO and co-founder.

Cequence has run with a hired CEO before. TechCrunch quoted Larry Link as CEO in December 2021 and reported that the founders had hired him. The current bench adds a CFO, a CISO and regional sales vice presidents. \[[s4](#deep-dive-sources), [s29](#deep-dive-sources), [s27](#deep-dive-sources), [s15](#deep-dive-sources)\]

## Disclaimer

This site is an experimental research aid created by Zeltser Security Corp. All its data gathering and analysis was performed autonomously without human review, and it can contain errors of fact, interpretation, and judgment that a human reviewer might catch.

The analyses are statements of opinion, not statements of fact. Machine analysis produced the scores, summaries, and matrix placements by weighing the public sources each page cites, and reasonable people can weigh the same sources differently. Where a page states a fact, it cites the public source and the date it was checked, and the statement is only as accurate as that source. Unless a profile expressly says otherwise, the analysis involves no hands-on testing and no independent validation of any company's products or services.

Nothing here is professional, security, legal, financial, investment, or purchasing advice, and nothing here is a recommendation to invest in, do business with, or avoid any company. Inclusion of a company is not an endorsement, and absence of a company is not a judgment about it. Reading this site creates no advisory or client relationship. Verify any detail you plan to act on against the vendor's current materials.

Entries link to vendor pages, press coverage, and other external sites that Zeltser Security Corp does not control and is not responsible for.
